REVIEW ACID DRAGON PROGRESSIVE MUSIC MAGAZINE NO. 44.2007 Website: http://acidrago.club.fr/ad2.htm MAGIC PIE “Circus of Life” While the metaphor of life as a circus may not be the most original concept the only things borrowed on Magic Pie’s second CD are classic influences ranging from early Genesis on ‘Welcome’ (parts of which bear a passing resemblance to ‘Musical Box’) and brilliant musicianship associated with worthy predecessors like The Flower Kings and Yes. The breathtaking interplay between synth and guitar on the instrumental ‘Freak Show’ needs to be heard to be believed and this piece, the second part of the ‘Circus of Life’ suite is simply the best piece of progressive rock music I have heard since The Flower Kings ‘Unfold The Future’. ‘What If?’ has a wondrous melody and sensitivity in the vocal and playing that mirrors Pink Floyd at an inspirational peak. The penultimate movement of ‘Circus of Life’ ‘Trick of the Mind’ is the most substantial piece on the album weighing in at a considerable 21:50- prime classic rock with sections that will appeal to metal prog fans and nice vocal tricks. There is also a delightful Yes/ Wakeman like synth passage. Outwith the ‘Circus of Life’ suite which has to be one of the best examples of its kind, the consistency is unadulterated as the band ventures briefly into Gentle Giant territory (in the vocal harmonies of ‘Pointless Masquerade’) and impart some words of wisdom on the final track ‘Watching the Waters’, a composition by keyboard player Gilbert Marshall but memorable also for accomplished lead guitarist Kim Steinberg’s take on Brian May! (Also listen out for the hidden blues jam at the very end!) I was impressed by Magic Pie’s first release ‘Motions of Desire’ but ‘Circus of Life’ just blows me away: brilliant playing, singing, lyrics, production and concept, this band from Norway has assimilated its influences well. Add ‘Circus of Life’ to your wants list! (Progress Records PRCD 024) (Contact: www.magicpie.net) ACID DRAGON - Phil Jackson
